Books

Mike Zwerin, La Tristresse de Saint Louis: Jazz Under the Nazis.

This highly personal book gives a rare look at the hidden world of jazz fans in Nazi Germany. Jazz was considered to be “degenerate” music by the Nazis, who banned it, but had difficulty defining what actually constituted jazz. The book derives its name from the French title that was given to disguise the national origin of W.C. Handy’s “St. Louis Blues.”

Timothy Findley, Pilgrim.

Findley’s novel about an immortal man ranks up there with The Epic of Gilgamesh and Janacek’s opera The Makropolous Case. And Carl Jung is one of the characters. Pretty cool.

Tom Sharpe, Porterhouse Blue

Tom Sharpe should be required reading for everyone in the world. He’s that good and that funny. Find out what happens when Porterhouse College, the weakest link in the Oxbridge chain—gets a new Master who wants to “modernize” the college. There are even rumors that academics will be given priority over crew and the high dining table. Which all goes to show you that higher education is no place for an intelligent person. A must read.

CDs

Mike Melvoin, It’s Always You

Jazz pianist extraordinaire Mike Melvoin delivers yet another brilliant CD, this time including in the roster legendary alto saxophonist Phil Woods. This album also features a lot of Melvoin original tunes. This is definitely already on the top ten jazz CDs of the year list.

Liz Forester, Liz Forester. Shanu Jazz Records SJR-74268-2

The only CD by a brilliant jazz singer from Minneapolis who seems to have disappeared from the music scene. A gifted interpreter of then Great American Songbook as well as Brazilian tunes. Liz, wherever you are come back and start performing again. We need you!
