Recently John Le
Carre, whose real name is David John Moore
Cornwell, wrote an opinion piece in the British
newspaper, The Times of London. He spoke of the
madness that has overtaken the presidency and the
American people. It seems we are "mad" because we
have struck out against terrorism and want to
prevent a tyrant from developing weapons of mass
destruction.
Like many who believe that because they are well
educated they are also intelligent, Cornwell
believes he has the inside track on foreign
relations between the United States and other
countries. While believing that Saddam Hussein is
in fact a despot, and he should be removed from
power; like all Liberals, Cornwell views any
actual action, whether proposed or taken to remove
the dictator from power, as deplorable. The
Left will always agree that Saddam is a vile
individual who has used chemical weapons and
gassed his own people, but if anyone does
something about him, they must be "mad."
Then again, Mr. Cornwell has another theory. We
must forget that the world waged war against
Saddam 12 years ago, that he slaughtered thousands
of Kuwaitis and then flaunted the peace agreement
that was ultimately signed after his defeat. We
need to forget Saddam's penchant for developing
weapons of mass destruction in general, and
nuclear weapons specifically; we must forget his
ties to terrorism and his complicity in attacks on
America and Americans.
Rather, we must be after the Iraqi's oil.
We have heard it all before. In 1991, America,
backed by virtually every nation in the world,
didn't kick Iraq out of Kuwait because it was the
right thing to do; no, it was because we wanted
their oil. It is all too often that the Liberals,
being devoid of any moral fiber of their own, are
unable to view actions that involve ethical
behavior as anything but dishonest and perhaps
"mad."
America is, in the mind of Mr. Cornwell "doing
more than bin Laden could have hoped for." Mr.
Cornwell apparently believes destroying the
Taliban, decimating Al Qaeda and removing safe
havens for terrorists is what the terrorists
wanted us to do, and by doing those things, the
terrorists win.
Like most thoughts written down by Liberals, Mr.
Cornwell explains how he and his fellow "thinkers"
aren't fooled into believing Iraq is a threat to
the United States, though "88% of America" is. No,
he and his ilk are just so far ahead of the
curve--they with their vast knowledge of Iraqi
politics and history and their full understanding
of what America is really all about--and know
better than the "little" people who inhabit the
world's sole superpower. After all, Mr. Cornwell
has written spy novels, some very successful, so
he must know the "truth."
Trying to understand the mindset that will not
accept acts in the pursuit of good, is made
simpler when that mindset is unwilling to accept
that "good" exists. According to Mr. Cornwell,
good and evil are not just subjective; they are
absolutes which if accepted lead to disaster.
President Bush's moral clarity following the
events of 9-11 is to be held in disdain; it leads
to "madness," according to the London Times'
opinion page.
On the other hand, the Liberal mindset which
condemns as "mad" the American desire and actions
to achieve safety for its citizens and country,
will not recognize the true "madness" of
terrorists and rogue nations (who view America as
the "Great Satan") as anything more than another
point of view.
The Liberals conveniently forget their original
requirements for military action against Iraq.
They wanted President Bush to go to Congress first
before any action was taken with regards to Iraq.
President Bush did that, and Congress by a nearly
unanimous vote in the Senate and a large majority
in Congress gave Mr. Bush the go-ahead. The
Liberals then demanded that Mr.Bush go to the
United Nations. Mr. Bush did, and in an unanimous
vote of the Security Council, authorized serious
consequences (military action) against Iraq in the
event of a material breach of the resolution. The
UN resolution spelled out what a material breach
is; and by anyone's account, at least for people
who can read, Iraq is in material breach, whether
it is because of their omissions to the United
Nations Monitoring, Verification, and Inspection
Commission (UNMOVIC), their firing on allied
aircraft, or their refusal to allow private
conversations with Iraqi scientists involved in
weapons production, all of which are delineated
material breaches of the resolution.
Undaunted by reality or even their own conditions,
the Left chooses to continue to hurl invectives.
America is either arrogant, seeking world
domination, unfair (why don't we incinerate North
Korea first?), following bad advice (just who is
really pulling President Bush's strings?) or we
need a diversion to deflect from the horrors of
our plummeting economy. Never does the Left see
the obvious even when they state it themselves.
Saddam is evil; he has weapons of mass destruction
and needs to be stopped. The Left prefers to
attack his adversary, us.
For some reason, Mr. Cornwell believes calling
President Bush a "cowboy," is an insult. Perhaps
Mr. Cornwell should learn a little more about what
a cowboy is.
