Slipped through the cracks

Gottasee Films
By Bill Doty

I find it somewhat confining trying to see films in theaters today. There are 10 choices, now pick one. I have a hard enough time finding something to watch on cable with access to over 200 channels. Therefore, VHS was a gift from the Gods. Now of course I have migrated to DVD although my mood related choices have not become any easier.

Too Mushy

Too Dramatic

Too Steven Seagalish...I can never really match my shade of red.

But I have a security blanket, in the form of about 30 movies I can watch forever. These are not blockbusters or listed classics. There are great films that have slipped through the cracks. It has taken years to develop this list. But because I care, I will share it with you. One movie at a time.

Inside Moves

(1980) Directed by Richard Donner - Cast John Savage, David Morse, Diana Scarwid

Slipping through the box office cracks, I can only blame its lack of big screen sizzle on society yet understanding the direction to take the new decade. John Savage (Deer Hunter) plays a self-afflicted cripple to befriends the regulars at a handicap bar. David Morse (St. Elsewhere, The Rock) becomes his bestfriend one operation away from an NBA career, torn between his future and what he must leave behind. Diana Scarwid (Mommy Dearest) is the tennis ball love interest. Three dimensional characters with real problems. I hate to admit it, but a feel good ending as well. I have seen this movie more than a dozen times and it still is a pleasure to watch (insert lump in throat here). John Savage never adapted well to latter 80's movie roles. His laid back persona did not keep up with the uptight, money driven roles being handed out through the Yuppie decade. But the time it right for movie goers to see him again. Inside Moves 2? You never know. Richard Donner will take any opportunity to direct as well as take a supporting role in his films. Even with the pain of his performance, I would go see it.
