Bottle
Rocket -
(1996)
Cast:
Owen Wilson, Luke Wilson, James Caan - Directed:
Wes Anderson
The
closet child of Wes Anderson (The Royal Tenenbaums,
Rushmore). Originally a short film, evolving to
a feature, Anderson proves you do not need a billion
dollar cast to create a classic.
Cast
your friends and use your surroundings. That is
how Anderson managed to produce this tale of three
friends looking to their ticket to criminal fame.
This was the platform that launched the careers
of Luke and Owen Wilson (co-writer) who was a
college buddy of of Anderson's at University of
Texas in Austin.
The
story is your typical guy gets out of mental asylum,
guy reunites with other guy, guys hire getaway
driver, guys rob book store, guys hide out, guy
meets girl, guy and girl speak different languages,
guys leave, guys get screwed by other guy, guy
goes to jail, group hug. Wes Anderson does an
incredible job portraying three losers who are
just looking for their brass ring. Anderson has
an incredible eye for cinematography, and an equally
incredible pen for writing believable dialogue.
James
Caan (Mr. Henry) approached Anderson during production
and asked what exactly the title Bottle Rocket
meant. Anderson had no better reply than "I
just liked how that sounded". Caan walked
away with disappointment. Later he approached
Anderson and said "I've got it. Most criminals
go off and create a crime that causes a big explosion, these
guys and great one that gives a little bang. Like
a bottle rocket." Though it was a little
bang, this film left a lasting impression with
me.
